My oh my, how great it feels to be sewing again! May this be one of many projects I plan to complete this year. I have about four UFOs (UnFinished Objects), twelve alterations on the docked, one cosplay, two dresses, and a few smaller projects to update my wardrobe. Once upon a time, a project list this long would be a walk in the park, but these days, my extra time is filled with home renovations and business building, so my scheduling will need to be highly strategic.
So, let's get into it. This post will be more of a pattern review, so I'll keep it short and sweet.
The project information is as follows:
Sewing Pattern Used: Vogue V8888 version E
Fabric Used: Light Pink Polyester Satin and Polyester Lace from JoAnn Fabrics
My thoughts on the pattern:
Pros
The nightgown is beautifully designed and has a classic look similar to 30s and 40s gowns, but much shorter.
The sizing is accurate, the pattern doesn't have an excess of ease.
It is generally a quick sew, between 4 to 8 hours, depending on your level of experience. If you don't plan on sewing with French seams like I did, I would estimate a 4-to-6 hour sewing time. It took me about 8 hours to sew from cut to finish.
Cons
The instructions are a mess. I looked up pattern reviews on the Simplicity website and there is a general consensus that the instructions are either missing steps or don't match the pattern pieces.
The pattern is missing a pattern piece. The envelope showcases the finished product (both the photo and the construction drawing) with waist ties and adjustable straps; however, the instructions do not mention either of these two features, nor are there pattern pieces for the ties.
The pattern is missing information regarding the elastic. There is no mention of what size (width) to use. I recommend using a 1/4" elastic and verifying you have enough fabric on the top of the back panels to create a channel for the elastic.
Overall, I think this slip is a beautiful design. I might revisit it with a sturdier fabric, such as silk or thick lyocell.
I would categorize this pattern as intermediate to advanced because it might turn away newer sewists who need more direction when sewing. Earlier in my sewing journey, I might have abandoned the project halfway through, but I have enough years of experience to troubleshoot and decipher what corrections are needed. Please let me know if you give this pattern a try; I would love to hear your thoughts.
